They were introduced as Ottoman mechanical clocks during Ottoman Empire by an engineer, Taqi al-Din, in 1556. Antique Ottoman pocket watches were originally invented to be used for astronomical purposes. Taqi al-Din later constructed a mechanical clock with three dials which show the hours, the minutes, and the seconds. In 1702, an Ottoman pocket watch measured time in minutes was created by an Ottoman watchmaker, Meshur Sheyh Dede.
Types of Antique Ottoman Pocket Watches
There are mainly two types of antique Ottoman pocket watches: the hunter-case Ottoman pocket watch and the open-face Ottoman pocket watch. The difference between them is that the hunter-case Ottoman pocket watch has a spring-hinged circular metal lid or cover attached to it, so that the watch-dial and crystal are well-protected from dust, scratches and other damage or debris; while the open-face Ottoman pocket watch doesn’t have a metal lid or cover attached to it, therefore its watch-dial and crystal might be scratched or damaged easily.
